Electric Yacht

Dan Kellahan and his wife moved to Australia around 4 years ago to work and earn money to build their dream yacht. Soon after their arrival Dan's wife turned up to work one day to announce they had just won the 2nd division lotto prize, which equated to around $100,000. Shortly afterward the Kellahans were on their way home to build their boat on a property they purchased near Wakefield.

Over the last four years, Dan has spent around 4500 hours building the yacht, which is a catamaran. He approached ecogise about supplying Thoosa electric engines and we fitted an electric engine in each hull that runs off a central battery bank. The boat, called 'Division 2', was launched on Saturday 3rd April in the Nelson Marina, and a crowd of very impressed spectators watched as its electric engines were used to power the yacht to its berth.

There are still another 1000 hours of work required to finish the boat, which Dan will carry out on the water as he had to sell their home to finance completion of the project. In a few months time when the boat is closer to completion we expect to carry out sea trials and then Boating NZ will carry out an inspection and run a story on the boat.

Dan and his young family (twin boys & a girl) intend to complete a circumnavigation of the South island before heading North and then off to the Pacific Islands.
