Thoosa Electric Engines by ASMO Marine + Click to enlarge
Propelling a boat with an electric motor is hardly new. In the late 1800's electric powered boats, some as large as 60', were used in England. Unfortunately electric engine development did not keep pace with combustion engines and the power to weight ratio development, gave the internal combustion engine the advantage. The great news is that modern technology and development of electric engines has caught up and passed internal combustion engine performance and efficiency, especially in the sailboat category.
Electric powered boats have definite advantages
- Most sailboats only need maximum power for start and emergency stops. The electric engine has torque from the first RPM - and will push the boat up to hull speed much faster than a diesel. A diesel needs to get high up in RPM before it comes to the torque the electric engine has instantly. When the boat is up to cruising speed, you hardly use more than 1/4-1/2 the engine power to keep it going. This is due to torque, but also due to the fact that diesel engines have a lot of losses due to gearing, pump and charging drive systems, heat etc, so they don’t supply all the power at the shaft.
- Electric motors start immediately with full power available.
- The system is virtually silent.
- Environmentally friendly. No oil spills or fumes to cause problems for those on-board or the ocean environment.
- The system can recharge the battery bank when sailing.
- Easy installation and alignment due to small engine size and weight.
- Low maintenance costs. Brushes = 4000hrs life time
Gear-belt = 3000hrs life time
Components
- Electric Engine - This is very light weight and compact, compared to a conventional combustion engine. The engine including reduction and mounting brackets is around 20kg.
- Controller - All the components of the system connect to the controller and it is priced as part of the engine.
- Monitor - The digital monitor plugs to the controller and displays the batteries state of charge.
- Ignition Key - This is also priced as part of the engine and plugs directly to the controller.
- Throttle - There are three types of throttles available; a double top mount, a single top mount and a single side mount.
- Smart Charger - The smart charger is used to maintain the batteries while in the marina or from a back up generator on board. There are many different chargers available in different voltages and amperages. The charger you require will depend on what engine and battery voltage you have.
- DC-DC Reducer - The reducer is used to reduce the engine battery voltage down to the auxiliary (ship services) battery voltage for charging purposes. Again there are a few different options available, depending on the engine battery voltage.
